Witricity – Wireless power for your mobile phone

July24

Wireless power graphic
A brilliant new invention has been demonstrated at the TED Global conference in Oxford.

“Witricity” provides a system to wirelessly transmit electricity! Same example uses include:

  • Wirelessly charge you mobile phone when your at home or in the office
  • Mount a flat panel TV without having to hide power cables
  • Re-charge your hybrid electric car without plugging it in

Best of all, they say the technology should be available in the next year  to 1.5 years!

Final Cut Studio 3

July24

Yesterday Apple released a new version of their Final Cut suite  – Final Cut Studio 3. The new version includes the following updates:

  • Final Cut Pro 6.06 7
  • Motion 3.02 4
  • Soundtrack Pro 2 3
  • DVD Studio Pro 4
  • Color 1.0.4 1.5
  • Compressor 3.0.5 3.5

One notable improvement – Final Cut 7 now support burning Blu-Ray discs! However, strangley, Blu-ray support is omitted from DVD-Studio Pro 4.

Also interesting to note, if you are able to obtain the upgrade package for FCS3 or FCP7, then you can use your existing FCS2 or FCP6 serial number.

More info and a review is available at Macworld

BBC and JJJ Radio on the iPhone

October23

I’ve been hunting around for ways to listen to my favourite radio station from downunder, Triple J, on my new 3g iPhone. Surprisingly all I could find was this post that ends in failure.

Well, after some experimenting I have a working solution and it’s free! The only drawback is at this stage I can only get it working with Wi-Fi (and not 3G), however this means it should also work on an iPod Touch.
Here are the steps:

  1. Download FStream from the AppStore
  2. Once installed, open FStream and add a new favourite using this address: http://www.abc.net.au/streaming/triplej/triplej.m3u
  3. Voila! You should now be able to listen to your favourite Aussie twang wherever you might be on the planet.

If you want to add the other stations you ca see in my screen grab, then here’s the URL’s you’ll need (note BBC only works in the UK)

  • BBC Radio 1 : http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio1/wm_asx/aod/radio1.asx
  • BBC Radio 2 : http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio1/wm_asx/aod/radio1.asx

Superb Web Design resource

October14

Smashing Magazine is an excellent web development blog that I only recently discovered. Their articles aim for quality and not quantity. This seems to be a rare approach these days given the constant overloaded of information that bombards us.

Articles on Smashing Magazine mainly focus on design aspects such as Photoshop tutorials, Wordpress templates and photography.

Here are a few articles that I thoroughly enjoyed that you too might find interesting:

Flipclock Screensaver

September23

The flip-style clock screensaver by Yuji Adachi (9031.com) has been around for a while now, however I reckon it’s just so cool and if you haven’t already tried it out then encourage to download it. I like it not only because retro styled flick-clocks are back in fashion, but also because it’s both beautiful and practical.  Best of all it’s free!

Clever pricing strategy

August18

If you were offered the following, which would you choose?

  1. Download album $7.99
  2. Physical album $14.99
  3. Download and physical album $14.99

In a recent study it was found that most people would choose the 3rd option. However when the study is repeated with just options 1 and 3, then most people would instead go for option 1.

This is because option 2 is a psychological decoy. It gives the impression that option 3 represents the best value for money, even though it is more expensive than option 1. Pretty smart hey?

It’s Marketing 101, however it’s a strategy that the music industry hasn’t seemed to have caught onto just yet. Follow the link to read the original article.
